Stagecraft; A Bag of Tricks!

Submitted by ricwallace on Sat, 08/22/2009 - 23:03

Have you ever wondered about how stages get designed, and layed out? How do the props get into place and what is all that shiny stuff hanging from the ceiling or or or...
Stages are a blank surface when you begin a production. And even in concert production, there's a need to plan every aspect of the stage for a particular tour or event. It takes a lot of people with specialized skills to make any large production work well. Here is a small list of departments and personnel that I consider to fall under the umbrella of Stagecraft & Performance Professional, yet this list only scratches the surface of depth and breadth of skills that make up the world theater and performance professionals;

sound
lighting
staging
carpenters
electricians
band techs
props
special FX
riggers/flyrail
seamstress'
stagehands
spotops
runner
technical director
stage director
company manager
the maestro

I'm including a class about stagecraft in class #1009 and I would like to hear back from prospective students about the desirability of classes on topics like this. I have a deep passion for stagecraft but I want to give students here meaningful lessons that will get them more work in the industry. The class is really an introductory examination of the stagecraft associated with concert production but if there was enough interest expressed from you, the students, other programs could be developed and offered. I for one would love to develop a course in theater science and techniques. Please leave some comments here if you are interested in stage craft or if there are some other topics you would be even more interested in! We want to hear from you and we need your feedback! Chime in and help shape the future of education!

I enjoyed the course very much! Learned a lot, and it forced me to use knowledge I already had, but never 'needed' to use!
