Course Description

An introduction into the principles of electronic sound synthesis, and the techniques used to create the sounds found in electronic music.

Taking you step by step through each of the basic elements of a track and demonstrating how you can create these using synthesis - drums, bass etc - so that you will be able to create a full track using only synthesised sounds.

Throughout the course topics will include:

Theory of subtractive synthesis
Practical sound creation using subtractive synthesis of drums, bass, pads, stabs, leads and special fx
Modular synthesisers
How vocoders work
Basic theory of FM & Additive synthesis.
MIDI basics

At the start of the course you will first be taken through the basics of subtractive synthesis with practical examples given throughout in order for you to get to grips with the basics parameters and sections available on all synthesisers.

Once you are happy that you know your way round the subtractive synth, you'll begin to create the basic sounds that make up our electronic tracks - starting with drums and bass and moving through the different elements like pads, stab sounds, lead lines and sound FX - whilst returning to other aspects of the practical use of synthesis like MIDI and CV, and touching on other forms of synthesis, like FM and Additive synthesis

A basic knowledge of the workings of a DAW that can support either vst or au plugins and an interest in electronic music.

Give the student the required synthesis theory, practical examples and tutorials for them to have the understanding and ability to edit existing synth patches, and create their own new sounds.

Week 1

- Subtractive Synthesis Basics
- Waveforms
- Sound Theory
- Saving Plugin patches

Week 2

- Basics of Drums & Bass
- Synthesis of Drums and Bass
- Modular Synthesisers
- Additive Synthesis

Week 3

CV & MIDI Introduction
- Monophonic vs Polyphonic Sounds
- Basics of Pads, Stab & Lead Sounds
- Key Tracking
- Vocoders

Week 4

- Basics of Sound FX
- Multitimbrality
- Choosing a Synthesiser

Understand all the controls and different parts of a subtractive synthesiser

Create drums, bass, pads, leads, stabs and sound FX from scratch using only synthesis

Integrate either software plugins or hardware synthesisers into your home setup

- Hardware: Computer and playback system, a controller is desirable for more hands on control, but not essential
- Software: A DAW that can can support either au or vst plugins, for example Logic, Ableton or Cubase. Novation V-Station Demo (link provided)

I have found that what you get out of this course depends on what you put in, much more so than with a face to face course.
