Course Description

Mixing is the perfect combination of art and science. On one hand you have to understand the song, the genre, and have an intuitive feel for how all the tracks should blend together in order to create the perfect mix, and on the other you need to know all the technical aspects and capabilities of the equipment required to actually perform the mix: consoles, dynamics processors, effects processors, etc. There are countless different ways you can mix one song, and each mix can have an entirely different feel.

This mixing course starts you off by learning about the aspects, techniques and equipment used in the mixdown process. Just some of the topics include: monitoring, ear training, analog and digital mixing, rough mixes, mix techniques and approaching a new mix, effects and dynamics processing, and bouncing your final mix.

Before you can begin experimenting, however, you need to know how all the pieces of a studio can work together to achieve your desired sound. This mixdown techniques course introduces you to the fundamentals of mixing in the box. It takes you through all the important steps of a complete mixdown procedure in your favorite software (Protools, Logic, Cubase etc). This course deals mainly with rough mixing, using EQ and compressors, automation and preparing for mastering).

  • Basic knowledge about your own individual mixing software.

  • Understand the main steps in mixdown (rough mix, editing, sub mix, automation and bounce)
  • Become knowledge in areas such as using EQs, compressor and FX (delay and reverb), stereo image, levelling, offset in depth, parallel compression)

  • Week 1:
    - Monitoring
    - Preparing and Ergonomics
    - Analog vs. digital mixing
    - Ear Training
    - PlugIn Delay Compensation
  • Week 2:
    - Signalflow in a mix
    - Strip Silence
    - Tempo in the mix
    - Quantizing an instrument
    - Rough mix
    - Levelling
    - Stereo image
    - Offset in depth
  • Week 3:
    - PlugIns
    - EQ
    - Compressor
    - Gate
    - Effects
    - Sidechaining
  • Week 4:
    - Automation
    - Bounce a mix
    - Mix checking
    - Preparing for mastering

On successful completion of the course you will:

  • be able to understand how to mix a song.
  • be able to apply all the important aspects and successfully mix.

This course requires a complete DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) with any host software installed (Protools, Cubase, Logic, etc.) with a good monitoring system.

I'm very pleased to have been a part of this course. I believe that I've learned a lot, and I'm sure I'll continue to learn more with returning to all what we did together...All the mixes and the articles are going to continue teaching me... Thank you :-)

Thank you SO much for everything, I feel like I've learned a lot and can't wait to do further studies with SAE online.

Zumbi, you do not know how much you helped me. The way i was thinking before was out of whack. Now for the first time i did a mix for my choir group and i was really proud of it. May be i did not give enough time to the session i was suppose to hand to you because i was busy mixing my other project, but it was rewarding when they listened to it. There impression was waaaaaaaw ))

Thank you so much. I hope we keep in touch (maybe in another course)

Thanks heaps Zumbi. This course has been a real eye-opener for me. I've learnt a lot. All of which I can put into practical use. I struggled in exercise 3 as you know and I thank you for standing by me through that section.

I was a little apprehensive before I chose to do this course, I wasn't sure how much I would actually learn. But I have been really surprised, it is very in depth for a short course. I found the resources to be excellent and Zumbi is the man!  (very knowledgeable!)
He always had plenty of time for me and my questions and was excellent with responding to questions and communicating. I now have a far greater understanding of how to mix correctly and I am very pleased with my final mix. I feel the course has also benefited my whole approach to creating my own music.Thank you...

To Zumbi & all the participants. I thought this course was very practical & straightforward for it's kind. I enjoyed this course a lot, the info given was very useful & hands-on if you ask me.
Plus Zumbi really shows interest in the participants and is not afraid to share his knowledge or to help out. Thumbs up!
