Course Description

Basic music theory introductory course; perfect for the engineer or producer who wants to get a little bit of music theory under their belts to improve their overall music production skills. In this course you will learn the basic elements of music and how to apply it to several songs/styles.

Music Theory Course Topics Include:

  • Music theory fundamentals
  • Chord progressions and intervals
  • Music styles
  • Harmonies
  • Melodies
  • Rhythm
  • Song structure and building a song

This course touches on the key aspects of music theory that everyone should know in order to enhance their writing skills: harmonies, rhythm, building your melodies, and song structure. You can apply the music theory in this course to any style or genre of music. In just 4 weeks, your songwriting and ability to work with other musicians and producers will improve.

Midi-compatible music notation software, or software using a notation section, such as: Logic, cubase, Finale Notepad, Guitar Pro, Musescore (free download) etc.

1st week Harmony part 1

  1. Basic Harmony (Major and Minor Triads)
  2. Basic Melody ( 7 basic Scales)

2nd week Rhythm part 1

  1. Lengths of notes and rests
  2. Meters (4/4, 3/4, 6/8)
  3. Styles (Rock, Blues, Latin,etc)

3rd week Harmony part 2

  1. More intervals
  2. Chord Progressions

4th week Getting it together

  1. Development of a melodic pattern
  2. Development of a harmonic pattern
  3. Development of a rhythmic pattern
  4. Song construction (Intro, Verse, Chorus,etc)

On successful completion of the course students will 

  1. understand the basic building blocks of music
  2. be able to analyse a simple composition
  3. be able to construct a simple composition

  • Hardware: Computer with internet access – Headset with mike
  • Software: Music Notation program (see Course Prerequisites)
