This course is designed to introduce principles of music theory utilizing Apple's Logic Studio. The focus will be on musical aspects most utilized by the audio engineer and/or music producer in a DAW medium. Logic's notation and sequencer capabilities will serve as the platform to discuss rhythmic concepts/patterns, time and key signatures, as well as scales and chord forms utilized in today's popular music. You will be expected to create simple sequences following specific progressions and various form/styles/genres, while utilizing legitimate notation practices available in the Logic score window.

Course Aims
Develop a firm grasp in music theory fundamentals while gaining some basic techniques in MIDI sequencing.
An overview of contemporary compositional styles will be explored which entails ear training and harmonic analysis.
Participate in short song writing examples based on standard rhythmic and harmonic techniques used in popular music.
Obtain a basic fundamental skill in sequencing, arranging and song production will serve as the goal.
Benefit from having studied simple music theory concepts that will serve to enhance your general music production skills.
Course Topics
An overview of Logic Studio and general MIDI concepts
Introduction to music notation (staves and rhythmic values)
Creating a major scale, understanding key signatures and diatonic harmony
Introduction of time signatures, quantization values and common rhythms
Setting up staves in Logic score window, inputing notes (comparing to piano roll and event list windows)
Composing simple rhythmic grooves and introducing various bass line concepts
Implementation of diatonic triads and closed/open voicing variations
Introduction to harmonic progressions within the major scale and utilizing Roman numeral diatonic analysis
Setting up multiple software instruments in Logic and composing standard 4, 8 and 16 bar examples based on R&B, rock, country and hip-hop genres - Sequencing tips and tricks available in Logic
