Course Description

This is a course on Propellerhead Reason for beginners level. You will learn Reason’s workflow, its instruments and devices, and how to record, edit and mix. This is a class designed for beginner Reason users and it focuses on midi sequencing, synthesis and mixing. It also covers with the Reason effects including Reason's two compressors (Comp-01 and MClass) and the MClass maximizer. Filters are covered in all of the Reason synths and samplers and so is the ECF-42, an envelope-controlled filter effect. As you may know, our classes feature an important amount of interactivity with the Learning Advisor, you will be able to ask all the questions you may need regarding these devices if needed.

  • Working in the style of your choice, you will learn how to create your own sampler and synthesizer sounds
  • Programming music in Reason’s sequencer, Redrum, Matrix step sequencer, and Dr Rex Loop player.
  • You will be required to work on a Reason song that should be completed upon the end of the course.

  • An introduction to Reason: Demonstration and overview. Listening examples. Reason’s workflow. Creating and patching devices. Transport and basic recording.
  • Reason’s Sequencer: Recording. Lanes. Clips. Midi editing and functions. Arrange and edit modes. The tool box.
  • Programming drums and beats: Redrum and Dr Rex Loop Player. Recycle overview. The Reason sound browser.
  • Reason’s Synths: Subtractor, Malstrom and Thor. Matrix Step Sequencer. RPG8 Arpeggiator.
  • Using samplers in Reason: NNXT. Reason’s FX: Creating, patching and using them as inserts or busses.
  • Mixing and automation: Assigning midi controllers to Reason’s parameters. Recording and drawing automation. Managing automation data. Applying the mastering suite to the final mix.

  • On successful completion of the course, you will be able to produce tracks in Reason using all of its instruments.
  • You will acquire mixing and production skills.
  • You will have at least one full, completed Reason song using the covered techniques.
