Course Description

Sound Theory 101 is an online course for those desiring a fundamental understanding of sound and audio recording. You will learn how sound is produced, measured, transmitted and recorded. Concepts and fundamental theory are the basis of this 101 course on Sound and Recording. You will learn about signal paths, recording equipment, media, mixing desks and effect processors and plug-ins. Full understanding of the material will prepare you to embark on a recording project (Sound and Recording 102) with confidence and knowledge on a conceptual level, regardless of hardware or software.

Desire to learn and understand sound and the audio recording process for the purpose of creating audio or to better appreciate recorded material.

  • Understand what audio (sound) is and how it is manipulated.
  • Obtain knowledge of recording equipment and media.
  • Learn concepts of effect processors (compressors, EQ, Reverb/Delay, Modulation).
  • Grasp the workings of a recording session (setup, tracking, mixing, and mastering).
  • Obtain a universal knowledge needed to begin in the field of audio recording with confidence and ability.

  • Mixing desks, A/D/A converters, audio interfaces.
  • Signal Paths Effect processors (Dynamics, EQ, Reverb/Delay, Modulation.
  • Recording session - tracking instruments, vocals, overdubbing. Mixdown and Mastering.

  • You will know how audio is recorded.
  • You will be able to identify and use studio tools and techniques to produce an end product.
  • You will know how to manipulate audio for use in recorded material regardless of the tools you have available.
  • You will possess conceptual knowledge to confidently begin a career in the recording arts, and be successful in Sound and Recording 102.

  • None. A DAW for reference may be helpful, but not required.
